On Saturday, Jan. ten, the Media Arts Council (MAC) opened its January exhibit, showcasing the function of Elkins Park artist Ameerah K. Art. She is 1 of a trio of Philadelphia-based artists referred to as the Art Sisters. This really is the very first non-MAC artist to become featured within the primary space from the new gallery, even though function by MAC member artists is on view and for sale within the second space from the gallery space. MAC executive director Judy Fowler stated that she was pleased to present the function of this "exciting young artist" whose function examines themes that address "culture, race and ladies." The artwork, she stated, will inspire viewers to reflect on these themes and how they influence our present society.

Ameerah K. Art, 28, who has been painting because she was 7, says art has "always been a passion." She says "music frequently inspires my artwork," as may be noticed by the big painting "Pretty Hurts," which was inspired by the Beyonce song from the exact same title. She also says she "admires figures in history who had a powerful sense of self" and "the courage to voice their point of view."

Probably the most striking functions will be the "27 Club," 4 paintings which had been inspired by reaching that age herself. These portraits of a number of well-known cultural figures who died at age 27 are drawn in outline with black and red lines against a square white canvas, suggesting the passion with which they lived and conveying a sense of incompleteness at getting died so young.

The MAC Gallery will probably be open 2-4 p.m. Thursdays, 2-5 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays at 609 B. W. State Street, Media. Ameerah's function will probably be on view and accessible for buy via Jan. 31.
