Biography

Bryan Ewing is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University,  while still maintaining an active professional performance  & teaching career.  Recent performances include:  acting Principal Trumpet of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra,  Principal Trumpet of the ASU Symphony Orchestra,  Lead Trumpet of the ASU Latin Jazz Band,  several full-length recitals,  and collaborations with David Hickman,  Joe Burgstaller,  Paul Merkelo,  Neil Berntsen,  Sam Pilafian,  Dan Perantoni,  Allan Dean,  Ronald Romm,  John Marchiando, Alan Hood,  Ray Mase,  Louis Ranger,  Alan Gilbert,  Bobby Shew,  Jeff Coffin,  Mike Kocour,  Dom Moio,  the Canadian Brass,  the Salt River Brass,  Yo-Yo Ma  & the Silk Road Ensemble,  the Copperstar Repertory (Broadway Musical) Company,  & the Phoenix Boy’s Choir.

In addition to an active performance schedule  & private teaching studio,  Bryan has served as the Trumpet Teaching Assistant at the Brevard Music Center,  as the the Brass Area Instructor at Emmanuel Lutheran School in Tempe,  and on the trumpet faculty of the Arizona State University Summer Jazz Workshops.  Most recently,  Bryan was named the winner of the 2012 Rafael Mendez Brass Institute Mock Audition. 

When away from trumpet performance  & teaching,  Bryan enjoys composing  & arranging music,  singing,  song writing,  playing guitar, audio recording,  and designing  & manufacturing trumpet mouthpieces  & trumpets  — including a five-valve trumpet that Bryan designed &  built as part of his Doctoral Dissertation Project at Arizona State University. 

The youngest child of two musicians,  Bryan was born  & raised in Bellevue,  Nebraska and began playing the cornet at the age of 8.  Soon after,  at the age of 13,  Bryan’s talent began to be recognized by the local music community,  and he was distinguished as the Outstanding Jazz Soloist at the leading local jazz festival.  Other high school accomplishments include:  three years as Principal Trumpet of the Nebraska Music Educators Association  (NMEA) All-State Symphony Orchestra,  a second outstanding jazz soloist award,  the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award,  the 2001 Omaha Area Youth Orchestra's Concerto Competition winner,  the 2001 Lincoln Municipal Band Concerto Competition winner,  and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln  “Nebraska Young Artist Award.” 

Notable performances include:  Substitute Principal Trumpet of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra,  the Nebraska Brass Ensemble,  Featured Soloist with the Dorian Music Camp  (Decorah,  Iowa)  Wind Ensemble,  and Principal Trumpet of the orchestras at the National Youth Orchestra Festival. 

Upon graduating from high school,  Bryan moved to Chicago and studied jazz trumpet,  jazz improvisation,  classical trumpet,  and digital sound design at DePaul University.  During his studies at DePaul,  Bryan performed in master classes with Vincent Cichowicz,  Barbara Butler,  John Hagstrom,  & Tage Larsen,  and he also served as Lead Trumpet of the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble  & Co-Principal Trumpet of the Classical Symphony Orchestra.  He subsequently continued classical music studies at Northwestern University. 

While at Northwestern,  Bryan studied applied trumpet privately with Charles Geyer,  Barbara Butler,  & Chris Martin.  Performance highlights include:  Principal Trumpet of the Northwestern Symphony Orchestra,  Third  / Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Evanston Symphony Orchestra,  the Civic Orchestra of Chicago,  the Chicago Philharmonic,  the New World Symphony,  the Music Academy of the West,  and the Aspen Music Festival  & School.  Master class appearances include:  Adolf Herseth,  Fritz Damrow,  Phil Smith,  Karen Brunssen,  Joe Burgstaller,  Paul Merkelo,  Ray Mase,  and Louis Ranger.  Maintaining a desire to explore multiple musical genres,  Bryan also performed as a member of the Chicago-based funk band Doko Benjo,  and he was employed as a studio musician for Studio Chicago & Uptown Recording Studio. 

Bryan currently resides in Tempe with his girlfriend Janna and Bombay cat Velvet.  When away from his musical endeavors,  Bryan enjoys walks,  reading,  and watching movies  & sports. 

Following his anticipated graduation from Arizona State University,  Bryan plans on becoming more involved in teaching  & community outreach,  sustaining an active performance career,  and developing a non-profit music business.
