Biography

Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music, reasonably recognized as one of the best music schools of Russia, in 2015 celebrated its 71-th anniversary.

«Gnesinskaya ten-grades standard school» that was opened in the first post-war year and which combined a music and general secondary schools in its academic activity, later became pride of Russian music education.

«School for particularly talented children», «future music elite» – this is how experts call this children’s music community, in which world-known distinguished musicians and workers of culture were trained: Natalya Shakhovskaya and Viktor Pikayzen, Karine Georgian and David Tukhmanov, Alexander Ivashkin and Ivan Monigetti, Alexander Rudin, Alexander Knyazev, Boris Berezovskiy, Eugeniy Kisin, Konstantin Lifshits and many others.

Among more than 1700 leavers of the school are winners of the most prestigious international performance contests, nominees and holders of Grammy Awards, Professors of European conservatories and heads of music departments in universities of the USA, Canada and Japan, teachers of music educational institutions of Russia, concertmasters and soloists of the largest symphonic and chamber orchestras of the world, authors and managers of music festivals, agencies, educational centers and school in all continents.

Discovery and upbringing of talent, individual approach and careful treatment of child’s personality, open competitive contest and, naturally, deep academic competence and highly professional skills in the art – these are the fundamentals laid by creator of the school, distinguished figure of our culture Elena Fabianovna Gnesina, are also kept nowadays. Leading Russian teachers, among which are Professors of Moscow state Conservatory and Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, honoured art workers of the RF, people’s and Honoured Artists of Russia, Honoured workers of culture, Doctors and Ph.Ds in Art history, teach the children; many of them are former pupils of the school.

In the framework of traditions formed 71 years ago, Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music continues training musically talented children of 5 to 18 years old. The today’s school is educational complex that combines work with preschoolers, general secondary school, music school and college in one curriculum. Graduates receive diploma of secondary professional music education which needs no certification under conditions of Bolognese convention, and continue their education in the leading music higher education institutions of Russia and abroad.

In 2014, after years of renovation of a historic building on Znamenka, 12, Moscow Secondary Musical School (college) named after the Gnessins has been returned to its home.

The House on Znamenka (Apraksina-Buturlina Manor) is a valuable architectural monument, located in the heart of Moscow. Its architectural appearance and the interiors have been restored according to the drawings of the XIX century.

Today the renovated house on Znamenka is a complex of three venues:
The Yard (the courtyard of the school) is a summer playground for open-air concerts and other events.
The Organ Hall is a universal concert hall with excellent acoustics and advanced technical equipment. The german pipe organ "Glatter-G
ötz" (2 manuals, 25 stops) has been installed in the hall.
The Garret is a Chamber Concert Hall and tone studio.
