Ensemble LPR and House of Yes invites you to BLACK ANGELS, a haunting and mesmerizing voyage of the soul through sound with music by George Crumb (Black Angels)and a world premiere of a song cycle by Ricardo Romaneiro (Nocturnal Suite) taking the listener on a journey from dark to light with theatrical performances by Lady Circus. Followed by Leo Leite’s live PA improv with guest artists & musicians.

George Crumb’s Black Angels: 13 Images From the Dark Land for electric string quartet was conceived as a kind of parable on our troubled contemporary world. The work portrays a voyage of the soul. The three stages of this voyage are Departure (fall from grace), Absence (spiritual annihilation) and Return (redemption). It draws from an arsenal of sounds including shouting, chanting, whistling, whispering, gongs, maracas, and crystal glasses.

Vocalist Daisy Press performs Favus Distillans. from a song cycle based upon Hildegard von Bingen’s Chants to Saint Ursula. It describes Saint Ursula as an “oozing honeycomb” where she gathers all of the virgins around her (11,000 of them) and they all bloom together like a flowering garden. Daisy’s interpretation of von Bingen’s 12th century sacred music echoes the past with a contemporary re-imagination.

Paired on the program is the world premiere of Ricardo Romaneiro’s Nocturnal Suite, an ethereal song cycle that is evocative of the night with words and vocals by Hannah Sumner, performed by Ensemble LPR featuring Sandbox Percussion, harpist Jacqui Kerrod and narrator Tom Schubert.

Post-concert live PA by Leo Leite featuring select musicians improvising a kinetic performance transforming the atmosphere into a pulsating rhythmic soundscape.
