Gotham Chamber Opera presents an evening of music at the intersection of East and West. Orientale features Monteverdi's Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, along with music by Rameau, Lully, Szymanowski, Delibes, Schumann, Bizet, and traditional Armenian music. The artists of Gotham Chamber Opera will be joined by a baroque instrumental ensemble, the dancers of Company XIV, the flute-harp-percussion trio MAYA, Grant Herreid (theorbo and baroque guitar) and Nina Stern (chalumeau and recorder).
Gotham Chamber Opera is the nation’s foremost opera company dedicated to producing rarely-performed chamber operas from the Baroque era to the present. Founded by Artistic Director Neal Goren in 2000 as the Henry Street Chamber Opera, the company fills a unique niche for New York: it produces intimate operatic works intended for small spaces, offering audiences opera that is not a distant spectacle but immediate, involving, and powerful theater. In its first decade, the company has mounted two world premieres, seven US stage premieres and produced seventeen new productions of operas featuring the work of such noted stage directors as Moisés Kaufman, Diane Paulus, Mark Morris and Christopher Alden, among others.
