Cited more than once by the New York Times as one of the
most vital interpretations of Terry Riley’s 1964 masterwork in recent
memory, Darmstadt’s annual birthday concert has become a time-honored
tradition. Now in its eleventh year, Darmstadt presents an eclectic
ensemble of new music legends, including guitarist David Grubbs, clarinetist Joshua Rubin of the ICE Ensemble, Trombonist Chris McIntyre, electronic musician Ben Vida, flautist and conductor Petr Kotik of the SEM Ensemble, and the breathtaking drumming of Greg Fox. Terry Riley‘s work was radical for its abandonment
of classical form, allowing any group of musicians to play its 53
musical fragments in just about any combination they wish. The result is
a hypnotic interweaving of mantric musical fragments, and is open to
myriad interpretations, Darmstadt’s birthday concert serves as the
annual benefit for its celebrated Essential Repertoire series. Funds
raised will support a three night concert festival in May at Roulette
celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Darmstadt Summer Course for New
Music. Darmstadt is the new music series led by composers Nick Hallett and Zach Layton, presenting seminal works throughout the history of experimental music, including masterpieces by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros, Meredith Monk, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Alvin Lucier, and Anthony Braxton. 2016’s ensemble includes Ben Neill, David Grubbs, Alex Mincek, Petr Kotik, Eli Spindel, Joshua Rubin, Greg Fox, Ben Vida, Daisy Press, Laura Ortman, Evan Rapport, Christopher McIntyre, Matt Mottel, Jeanann Dara, Jessica Pavone, Megan Schubert, Josh Modney, Peter Gordon, Jen Baker, Peri Mauer, Peter Hess, Justin Kantor, Zach Layton, Jason Cady, and Jen Baker.Seated: advance, day of show Standing: advance, day of show For further information or to purchase tickets, visit: bit.ly/1PIyfoQ |
